How to Add Expand and Collapse Text

When a section of text gets long, your website editor can let you decide whether visitors see the entire message immediately or reveal the rest with a read more option. This is controlled by the Truncate setting, where you can choose Show All or Expand & Collapse.

Show All

Choose this when you want the complete text to remain visible on the page without shortening it for visitors.

Expand & Collapse

Choose this when you want only part of a longer passage displayed at first. Visitors can use the read more control to reveal the remaining text.

The screenshot below shows the Truncate control in the editor. Open this dropdown when you want to change how much of the text visitors initially see.

How to use Expand & Collapse

While editing the content you want to shorten, locate the Truncate setting shown above. You can then choose how that text should appear to website visitors.

  1. Open the text or content item you want to adjust in your website editor.
  2. Find the Truncate setting for that content.
  3. Open the dropdown and choose Expand & Collapse if you want the text shortened initially with a read more option.
  4. Choose Show All instead when you want the complete text visible immediately.
  5. Preview the page and make sure the amount of visible text works well for visitors before you finish your update.

Your full text is still there

Expand & Collapse changes how much text visitors see at first. The remaining content is not deleted; visitors can reveal it using the read more option.

Which option should you use?

Use Expand & Collapse for longer passages

It can make a page easier to scan when a description or explanation would otherwise take up a large amount of space.

Use Show All for shorter or must-see information

If the text is already concise or visitors should see the information immediately, leaving the full content visible is usually the simpler choice.
